What a cracking read! So much going on and so many variables to consider!

Rachel King is readying herself to return to work as Detective Chief Inspector after maternity leave when she gets a sudden call out and jumps into the job the evening before her planned start. The discovery that a baby has been abducted can’t be left until the next morning and, although it tugs at her heartstrings, Rachel knows the job comes first. Matters get considerably worse when she finds out that the baby belongs to one of Manchester’s crime bosses who, along with his partners, are known at the Trio. When the elderly mother of another of the pack goes missing from her care home, Rachel realises that this can only spell bad news for herself and her colleagues; the Trio are known for their vindictive violence and won’t take these incidents without retaliation. Things get considerably worse when Rachel’s partner and father of her child, Jed – also an ex-gangland boss – is suspected of being behind both disappearances. What does that mean for her role?

Another amazingly complex series from the pen of Helen H. Durrant – and one which kept me on my toes throughout. With red herrings in the mix, my nose followed where it was led and a merry dance was had! I am in awe of any author who can be so prolific and produce different series without ever getting muddled up; this is another gripping, twisty novel which I didn’t seem to have been reading for any length of time before I came to the nitty-gritty of who did what to who, when and why. It’s always a pleasure to read Helen’s books and this is another triumph. Creatively written with subtle misdirection along the way, I was left with my jaw hanging open when I got to find out who the villain was. Definitely one you don’t want to miss, and completely worth all five sparkling stars!

Author Details

Helen is one of the ‘baby boomer’ generation and began writing when she retired from her job at a local college. Born in Edinburgh to an English father and Scottish mother the family settled in a Pennine village between the counties of Lancashire and Yorkshire. It is an environment which has shaped her stories. Writing is a second career and, despite having a bus pass, keeps her busy, and tuned in.

Helen’s children are all grown-up and she has five grandchildren.
