Shallow Grave meets The Secret History in this quirky psychological thriller
When you’re bound together by secrets and lies who do you trust?
Bristol, 1988.
Five young graduates on the threshold of their careers buy a house together in order to get a foot on the property ladder before prices spiral out of their reach. But it soon becomes the house share from hell.
After their New Year’s Eve party, they discover a body – and it’s clear they’ll be the first suspects. As each of them has a good reason from their past not to trust the police, they come up with a solution – one which forces them into a life of secrets and lies.
But can they trust each other?
Creative & Beguiling!
My first encounter with Katharine Johnson’s writing – and it won’t be my last!
Five young people, fresh from graduating, all take up positions training in their chosen profession. It’s 1988, and their chances of owning their own homes are slim – so slim as to be barely noticeable. By pooling their meagre resources they manage to get a mortgage on a large property badly in need of repair and so begins their lives in the ‘real’ world. However, their idyllic life together is threatened by the spiralling mortgage rate and, just when they think things can’t get any worse, they discover a dead body in the house. Following a fair bit of panic, they decide not to contact the police but to deal with the matter unconventionally – but will any of them fold under pressure?
Creative and beguiling, I have been totally enthralled by this novel – a completely new scenario to me, and a story which unfolds slowly and tantalisingly. Full of twists and turns, this is a beautifully written and well-structured tale, and all credit to author Katharine Johnson for coming up with such a unique and original idea. The characters are flawed, making them so realistic and fully understandable! There are some real shocks and surprises along the way, adding to the tension. There is no way I could have worked out where it was heading; kudos to the author! A stunningly great read, and one which has fully earned each one of it’s five glowing stars.

Meet the Author
Katharine Johnson was born in Bristol and now lives in Berkshire. She’s worked as a journalist on lots of magazines and has written a history book about Windsor. When not writing you’ll usually find her with a book in one hand and a coffee in the other, restoring a house in Italy, walking her spaniel or playing netball (although not usually at the same time).
