A Promising Start!    Stars 4

A promising start to a new series which looks to be both evocative and fun!

Set in the pre-WWI period in Britain and beginning with interviews for staff at a new department store in London, we meet the main characters as they first meet each other whilst hoping they will be successful in finding work. As the four women take up their new positions, fledgling friendships begin to grow . . .

I love to read books set in and around both periods of war in the early 20th century, and this is very enjoyable in setting the scene for what I hope is several more stories. As women spread their wings and find more of a place in society, I’m always fascinated to learn all the small details of their everyday lives. With a stunning backdrop to this story, beautifully rounded characters provide the highs and lows of daily life, this author’s experience in spinning an enthralling tale shines through. I can tell this is a series I’m going to enjoy. I’ve read a few other novels in a similar vein as well as watching ‘Selfridges’ on tv, and am hoping for something a little different and surprising to come. Worth four stars, and a high recommendation!

My thanks to publisher Boldwood Books for my copy via NetGalley; all opinions are entirely my own and completely honest.
