Written by Patricia Dixon
Set on the coast of Portsmouth and the beautiful Loire Valley, this is the story of Anna.
A married mother of three, the unremarkable rock of her family is content with her life until she discovers that Matthew, her husband of 22 years, is having an affair.
Consumed by hurt and tainted memories, Anna’s life is turned upside down by first betrayal and then loss. Her confidence totally destroyed, she is tormented by the spectre of Matthew’s unknown lover. Whilst keeping the secret of his affair from her family, Anna must find her way through the pain alone.
With one son on the other side of the world, another about to enter a war zone and her daughter off to university, Anna’s life gradually begins to crumble until someone from her past appears.
Can Anna find peace and learn to love again?
Utterly fabulous! This is a richly detailed novel with a charismatic main character and the story just leaps off the page.
Finding out her husband of twenty years and father of her three children was cheating on her was a dreadful realisation for Anna; when he died before she had the opportunity to confront him, it left her devastated as she now carried the knowledge that she was on her own with this information. Would she ever know why? Holding herself together for the sake of her sons and daughter, Anna finds herself unable to grieve for the man she cherished for half her life. As her children all set out on their own paths, Anna struggles to get through each day. Can she recover from this life-changing discovery?
This is the sequel (although it can easily be a stand-alone read) to Rosie and Ruby, my previous read. Anna was a minor character and I was thrilled to get the opportunity to follow her story and find out all about her. The first book was so beautifully created and this one continued with the same attention to detail. Anna’s story is very touching and will no doubt affect every woman who reads it. She has spent all her time caring for and nurturing her family; suddenly the structure of her life has completely altered and she struggles to cope with the double whammy of widowhood and betrayal.
An attention-grabbing book, this one kept me glued to the pages. Like the first book, it is packed with details and the story evolves as we follow Anna’s life, privy to her thoughts, doubts and successes. This author has the knack of creating characters who lift off the page and the story flows easily from start to finish. A stunningly good read to which I’m happy to give the strongest recommendation, and well worth a full five stars.
