Thirty-two-year-old Hetty Greengrass is the star around which the rest of her family orbits.
Marriage, motherhood and helping Dan run Sunnybank Farm have certainly kept her hands full for the last twelve years. But when her daughter Poppy has to choose her inspiration for a school project and picks her aunt, not her mum, Hetty is left full of self-doubt.
Hetty’s always been generous with her time and until now, her biggest talent – baking deliciously moreish shortcrust pastry pies – has been limited to charity work and the village fete. But taking part in a competition run by Cumbria’s Finest to find the very best produce from the region might be just the thing to make her daughter proud . . . and reclaim something for herself.
Except that life isn’t as simple as producing the perfect pie. Changing the status quo isn’t easy – and with cracks appearing in her marriage and shocking secrets coming to light, Hetty must decide where her priorities really lie . . .
Wonderful, Heartwarming Read!
This is a story about love .. family love, parental love, love for friends, family and animals .. and it is a truly wonderful, heartwarming read.
Dan and Hetty run the farm he inherited on the death of his father; his sister Naomi runs a successful farm shop promoting local produce. Hetty’s best friend since schooldays lives nearby with her son, only slightly older than their daughter Poppy, and although farming is hard work they have a good relationship and a happy life. Then Naomi talks Hetty into entering her delicious pies in a competition for locally sourced food and secrets and that is the catalyst for secrets to come crawling out of the woodwork.
Dan isn’t as supportive as he could be, and after all the years Hetty has given to the farm, she is desperate to do something for herself – especially as Poppy recently picked her aunt as her inspirational woman. But this is just beginning of the hurtful revelations to come – will their marriage survive?
Packed full of warmth, memories. and compromise, this is a terrific read – as you would expect from Cathy Bramley. Expertly written and constructed, this is a book which made me smile as well as having me reach for a tissue. Entertaining and very enjoyable, it is a thoroughly good read which I’m happy to recommend.
